Best Childhood Ever

A Memory of Easington Colliery.

I was born in Easington Coliery in December 1940. Grew up in Canada In Dene Avenue. My dad worked At the pit as a wagonwayman in the Hutton Seam. Grandparents were from Cornwall Stret, East.I had a tha best childhood ever. Hawthorne Dene, Boaties Bay. The white steps at the railway to the Beach Banks , the viaduct, , Ariel flight , gorgeous scenery . Wonderful schools , great people, Seaside Lane, Timothy White and Taylor's Chemists( Mr.Brown) Dr.Porteos kind , caring Doctor , Mr Byrson (farmer) Potato Picking in October school holidays. The great Welfare Hall for Saturday Dancing. I live Thousands of miles away now. , but have made regular visits back there. No place like it on Earth. Also Petwel Lane , beautiful walk to the Village. I could go on and on , it will be with me forever.

Hello Joan Battiste. The numbers of people I come across from around your generation who have strong feelings towards their childhood upbringing at Easington Colliery is impressive. I am four and a half years older then you and feel much the same. I have an item on this site below yours. Is this you ?

I read this story with great nostalgia; I was four years old when I arrived in Easington. We lived in West Avenue, Canada, and I lived there until I got married in 1964. My dad was also in the pit working as a lamp cabin man.
Doctor Porteos was my doctor I used to pick potatoes in the holidays, and about 6 or 7 friends used to spend the whole day playing in the dene, you can not imagine that these days, I had the happiest childhood ever, I also could go on and on. I live in Europe now and never get back. That would be a dream,
you have started my head going around now, the pleasure of the Barn dance in the Welfare hall on a Saturday night, lots of wonderful memories
