East Bergholt, St Mary's Church c.1955

More about this scene
The church was rebuilt in the late 15th century. The western tower was started later in 1525 with a stone base and, as at nearby Dedham, a vaulted ground floor with processional arches in the north and south sides. But through lack of funds the tower was never finished. John Constable made several sketches and paintings of this, his native parish church.
