More about this scene
There is a substantial amount of Victorian development seen in this view of the town from the west, looking across Brooklands Park and the new cemetery on Queens Road with its chapel. The expansion really started when the railway arrived in 1855. The tower of St Swithun's church, very much a landmark, shows where the old town is centred. The tower in fact belongs to James Wyatt's rebuilding of the whole church following the medieval tower's collapse in 1785. Sussex Towns From Chichester to Uckfield
