More about this scene

London Road is part of the medieval route through East Grinstead. By 1910 the latest mode of transport, the motor car, could be seen on this and many other roads. Grosvenor Hall (left) was built in 1883. It was later acquired by Letherby & Christopher, and was re-opened as the Whitehall in 1910. The extended building contained a skating rink, a restaurant and a theatre, which showed early films and newsreels.

The Bomb
I was sick with Chickenpox that Saturday when the bomb fell on the cinema. I stood p to look out of the window to see the smoke.

My First School
I was at Aston House school 1943 to 1948 I started writng memoirs for my children Remembered the Miss Holts Anyone else who was there at that time/

My First School
In 1950, I started school at Chequer Mead. I had walked there from Copse Close, near Queen Victoria Hospital. We each had a desk and a slate to write on. My big sister was in the ‘big’ school, next door as she was fourteen. I used to stand and watch her play netball at playtimes. Miss Rowe was my favourite teacher and I cried for hours when I had to leave to go to the new Junior school at Blackwell. Lovely lady and great teacher.

Walking To School In 1950
As a five year old, and for the next six years, I walked up Blackwell Hollow to go to Chequer Mead school. Sometimes, I was accompanied, but quite often, I went on my own. I lived near Queen Victoria Hospital, so it was quite a walk for a little one. Unbelievable today, but of course, the roads were less busy, and life was much slower.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
