More about this scene
To the west of Jervaulx lies this pretty village, nestling around the spacious green. The centre is overlooked by the 1100ft- high Witton Fell, and on the green is a huge boulder brought down by 20 horses in 1859. In the Farmery Mine a disaster in 1820 killed 20 men - their graves are in the churchyard. Another disaster had hit the village in 1796 when a fire destroyed much of the fabric, and it mostly had to be rebuilt. The Blue Lion Inn was in the hands of the same family from 1856 until 1989.
