More about this scene
In 1891 a fire caused considerable damage to the fabric of the building, and the impression from the photograph is of a complete rebuilding soon after that date. From an internal inspection, however, it is soon clear that the 17th century was not completely obliterated in its dark friendly bar. To the left of the photograph a glimpse is afforded of a weather-boarded timber barn converted relatively recently to restaurant use. It is a pity that the setting of the building has not entirely retained its rural air.
