The recreation ground was part of Little Eastleigh Farm. It became known as the cricket field, and in due course was bought by the Urban District Council. In the distant centre can be seen a house named Fairholme, the home of William Panter, superintendent of the carriage works and a leading man in the early development of the new town. The bandstand dates from 1909; it has a concrete base and roof replacing an earlier open wooden structure. In the centre is the war memorial, almost unique with its angel of victory; there is only one other such memorial in England. Just visible on the left is part of the library.
