Memories Of 1950s Eastleigh

A Memory of Eastleigh.

I lived in Chandler's Ford but went to school in Eastleigh. First to Cranbury Road and later North End Secondary. Remember the Library well, a small children's section, couldn't wait until I was old enough to use the adult section, so many more choices. The bandstand was in the park. On summer weekends bands played, we would sit on the grass and enjoy.
Sometimes we would buy a platform ticket just to watch the trains go by, rushing from Southampton to London.
The best ice cream was at Ruscillo's, it was a real treat to have a cone there. At five o'clock each afternoon employees from Pirellis and Cawstons would stream out on their bikes to Leigh Road. Not many people had cars in those days.
Fleming Park had a fish pond, miniature golf and tennis courts and a playground. Spent many happy hours there.
I now live in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada and have lots of great memories of Eastleigh.

Joanna was a good friend of mine. I too went to Cranbury Road. school, and then North End. We were sad when she and her family left for Canada. We were in touch, but both moved and lost contact. I remember we girls had to make our own 'divided skirt' pleated shorts in the main school colour (maroon) during sewing lessons, so that we could wear them for some of our sports. We also made white cotton aprons for 'domestic science'. There were whitewood topped tables which we had to scrub after.cooking. Something I doubt if anyone had at home. The age of plastic had begun and homes had formica and fabric. I was interested in mathematics, but I remember our lessons (Miss Jones) did not run very smoothly and if my memory is correct, time was wasted. Best wishes Joanna if you read this! Mary! I have often thought of you. We had many good times at North End. I remember how we used to giggle, our parents could not understand why we laughed so much. On a return visit I stopped at your house on Keble Road, the new residents did not know where you were. Would love to hear from you. I am on Facebook.
Miss Jones our Math teacher had trouble controlling the class, especially Oxley. I live in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Our sewing lessons for me resulted in a grubby white apron that my mother had to wash and fix up. However that did not discourage me from sewing in my married life. I made dresses for my daughters, did embroidery and knitting.
Even though North End did not have a stellar reputation, I think that we were given a good basic education and many great experiences that I still value today.
The friendships were a memory that still continues.
