More about this scene
The name Eccles comes from 'ecclesia', and means 'the place of the church', so it is no surprise that its central street is called Church Street. Our view is looking up from the Square towards the railway station. The square tower of St Mary's can be seen peeping out at the centre back of the picture. St Mary's is Eccles's parish church; it was mentioned in 1180, and is one of the very first founded in the area. Eccles Cross is on the very right of the picture in front of the District Bank. Though it is old, it is not the original cross, which was knocked over and broken by a lorry on the first night of the black-out. It was put away for safe-keeping and never seen again.
