Rose Qeen Day
A Memory of Eccleston.
I participated in Rose Queen Day in June from 1945 until June 1954. As a pupil at the little village school my first experience was learning the dances which, after much practising in the playground, became wonderful maypole dances. We didn't get to use the ribbons until we were step perfect! On the day the maypole was erected in the field behind the church hall ready to entertain the Rose Queen and her entourage. Our proud families and friends would be watching too of course.
As I got older I, along with boys and girls from school, learned to morris dance. We practised in the church hall in preparation for taking part in the procession through the village. We wore bells on our wrists and shoes, also tourquoise sashes over white dresses. Not the boys of course!!
Two horse drawn landaus were hired from Southport, one for the retiring queen and her attendants, the other for the new one and hers. The sun always seemed to shine and I remember Vicar Naggington saying that people would ask him when next years festival would be so they could book their holidays!! No foreign packages in those days!!
Sadly, I have no photographs. I do hope someone may have some to share. Sylvia
