More about this scene

The Canongate was where the canons of Holyrood Abbey entered the Old Town. The tolbooth, with its projecting clock, is one of the most famous landmarks on the Royal Mile and dates from 1591. Note the poles used for drying washing. When this picture was taken, the tolbooth was already more than 300 years old, having been built at the end of the 16th century. It has had a varied career, having been used as a courthouse and a prison.

Memories of Edinburgh, the Canongate Tolbooth 1897

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Edinburgh, The Canongate Tolbooth 1897

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My great-great-grandfather lived here at Shoemakers Close, and my great-grandfather David Hay with his mother, Helen Millie.  My great-grandfather was a shoemaker, as was his son John Millie. My great-grandfather died June 19th 1863, he was ageed 70 years, a good age at that time. My husband, who was born in 1932, was born just across the road from the Canongate Tolbooth. How the years have flown.
