Teaching At Edmondsley School

A Memory of Edmondsley.

Hello.
I thought I should add to your memories, At the time the new school was built. I held the position of Infant 1 and 2 teacher,Mrs Beatrice Pickering taught Reception. Mrs Patricia Henderson taught year 3 and 4. A supply teacher,. I believe she was called Mrs Douglas was teaching year 5 and Mr John Hall was teaching year 6 and was Deputy Head.
Mrs Pickering and I had taught in the old school Mrs Pickering had taught for 5 years in the old school and I had taught for 3, Mrs Henderson replaced a teacher named Mrs Ecclestone who had taught at the school for over 20 years.
I had been a pupil at Edmondsley School in 1951 - 1955 returning to teach there in 1966 and had found little had changed in the old school.
We watched the new school being built in the school yard. so moving in was very exciting.
On the second day a handbrake had been left off a digger, which rolled down the hill demolishing the year 4/5 class, It was one of my most exciting yard duties, The other exciting yard duty was when a 30 foot mine shaft opened near the bottom of the school field.,
I left Edmondsley school as head of the Infant department after 11 years. As well as teaching there i also helped run a Youth Club twice a week with Mr Grindle and one of the school governors. We had approx 80 children a week attending the Youth Club.
I hope your time at the school was enjoyable.
Miss Jones / Mrs Shiell
