More about this scene
Now known as the Shropshire Union Canal, the Ellesmere Canal was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The system linked the River Dee with the Mersey, the Trent and the Severn. It was also intended that there should be a canal going from Ellesmere directly to the north to reach the sea at Ellesmere Port.
