Wootton ran his stables at Treadwell House, off Downs Road. He had come to Epsom in 1906 when he was a boy, arriving with his father Richard from Australia. Richard Wootton soon came to head the Trainers' Championship, while Stanley was best known as a tutor of jockeys. The Wootton Academy, as it was called, stressed 'confidence, obedience, cleanliness', as well as corporal punishment and a ban on girlfriends. It seems to have worked; one Treadwell House graduate, Charlie Smirke, went on to win four Derbies.

The Gate Posts To Nork Park.

These were the original gateposts that marked the entrance to Nork Park. These originally where placed at the entrance to The Drive, that leads to Nork Park. Later in the 1930's, they where moved to their present site at Ruden Way when the Nork Estate and Country House was sold. Luckily, two of these posts remain in the same place today. This is the view I wake up to every morning! EpsomHistorian.

When I Was Just A Lad Back In The Sixties.

Ebbisham Hall for dances. White Hart next door. Spread Eagle opposite. Eclipse pub West Hill. Nelsons open air pool. Snooker hall above Burtons. Cafe in South Street. Arthur Wheeler Waterloo Road where I bought my first bike. And I loved the racing.

The Cabin Shop In Epsom
Who remembers the Cabin shop in the alleyway between Longrove Rd and Horton Hill. Mum sent me shopping there many times with a list. Quite scared sometimes as there were a lot of mental patients wandering around the alley. Cute little shop though . Barbara Sainsbury

The Sherwood Pit
During the war I attended Sherwood Boarding School on Church Street and Downs Road. Behind the house was an abandoned and overgrown chalk quarry (The Pit) with an old cottage, our arts and crafts classrooms. The cottage is gone and it is now called "Elizabeth Welchman Gardens" On Saturdays we also went to the Odeón morning matiné. One of our group would pay to get in then open the side door for the rest of us! ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
