Whites Green Grocers Station Rd. " The Big Banana"
A Memory of Erdington.
Throughout the 1970s I worked as the Saturday Boy for Walter White , the greengrocers in Station Road. Everyone knew his shop because of the large wooden banana which hung in the front window . I understand that this was an advertising prop given to traders by Fyffes bananas after the war but Mr White had kept this novelty which became a trademark of his business.Incidentally, Mr White was a lovely man and I have many fond memories of working there throughout my teenage years, The shop eventually closed upon his retirement in the 1980s, and is currently a tattoo artist establishment.
