Memories Of Erith
A Memory of Erith.
Erith was a great place to go when I was a kid as so many different shops and two department stores – Blundells and Micthell’s they were on opposite corners. I remember wondering around Micthell’s at Christmas time. I think Mitchell’s had a second hand furniture section just up the road from the Odeon in High Street. We would go to Odeon on a Saturday to watch the latest Weston’s or ScFi for 6 or 9 old pence.
There was also Woolworths, Burtons, Boots and British Home Stores were Mum would go shopping for her groceries a lot of which was cut and packed for you by the shop assistants.
Next to Burtons was a chemist where I would by my chemistry bits.
There was a Men’s clothing shop in Pier Road where I brought my first pair of jeans and further up there was cake shop.
And of course at the top end of Pier Road was the LEB show room with their great curve mirror window – the building is still there last time I was in Erith. Just down from the LEB was the Ritz cinema.
All the developments since the 1960’s has taken the heart out of Erith.
My Mum and her sisters would go to the cinema at the Pom-Pom at the bottom for Fraser Road.
