Escric Station

A Memory of Escrick.

I was born on the 13 February 1957 at No2 Station cottage Escrick. No.2 was the middle cottage of 3.
My father (Kenneth Hudson) was a fireman/driver on L.N.E.R. steam locos. For along time we had no electricity in the house, Lighting was by gas light or candle. There was no running water, That had to be delivered everyday in 4 milk churns which were dropped at the station behind the cottages. These 4 milk churns of water had to bath 2 kids and 2 grown ups, Flush the outside toilet and still provide enough water for cooking.
Outside the house we kept chickens and to the left as you looked at the front of the house there was an orchard. This was a play ground for me and my older sister at Rose cottage Cawood.
I all ways remember going to meet dad at the station and would often get a ride on the foot plate At No.1 Station cottage there was Frank, He was a fireman on the L.N.E.R. locos. I dont know if Frank got the same amount of water delivered in milk churns as we did. I dont recall any one from No.3 but im sure it was occupied by another family who worked for LNER.
Before Beaching closed the line past our station cottage, we had moved to No12 Bracken close in Huntington.There was a big open field at the back of our garden and you could see right down to the busy A64 main road.
When I was old enough ... I came back to our old cottage in Escrick many times but never found any one at home, I was hoping to get a photograph or two for an old time sake. On my last trip in 2016, our station cottage home had been pulled down, demolished and 2 new homes replaced it.
After my parents split up my sister an I came to live in Manchester with our grandparents. My grand mother worked at Exchange station in the city centre and during the school holidays. I would wait on the station for the train my dad was driving and get a ride on the foot plate there (where ever that might be) and back again.
After my basic training at Strensall camp (Kings division) I did my tour of duty with the Green Howards Same regiment as my dad and his dad I came to live in Manchester in 1983 I would have loved to have moved back in to Station cottage. I think thats why I cane back so many times.
If any one has any pictures or photographs that have copies of so I can show my kids and grandkids I would be very grateful.
