More about this scene

Despite the fact that they were supposed to be on the same side when it came to defending the Borders, the Herons of Ford and the Manners of Etal did not always see eye-to-eye. In January 1428 a quarrel between William Heron (the younger) and John Manners culminated in a pitched battle between their armed retainers at Etal. Heron was butchered in the traditional Border fashion; the only other fatality was one Robert Atkinson. A royal commission was appointed to investigate the killing, and it ended with Manners having to go to Newcastle and submit. He was ordered to have 500 masses sung within a year for Heron's soul and to pay his widow 250 marks.
