More about this scene

East from Claygate and across the Hogsmill river valley, the route reaches Ewell, now by-passed by the A24 London to Worthing road. The town preserves its High Street well at the north end and along Church Street, a turning off it; both streets contain timber-framed and later Georgian houses of quality. This view, though, is of the south end, which has fared less well: typical suburban mock-Tudor shopping parades proliferate both on the left and out of view to the right and behind the camera.

I Had Relations In Shortcroft Road

It Looks Bigger Than I Remember
I lived in Ewell as an american child. I remember a small tuck shop, a confectionary and the pub Toby (I think that's what it was called). I still remember the half curtains that effectively prevented me as a child from peering into the pub; but I remember the browns in the pattern of the curtains and an old toby mug. Looking at the pictures of the village of Ewell, it's bigger than I remember

Sparks Memories
The Jolly Waggoners was situated on the corner of Beggers Hill and Shortcroft Road. I lived with my family at number 28 just around the corner. My early memories were my dad, brother and I going down to the pub on a Sunday to play darts and sip my shandy while mum prepared Sunday dinner. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
