More about this scene

Arthur Trevorrow is throwing a jug on the wheel; beside him are various examples of his work, beautifully hand-decorated with slip in waves, whorls and dots. On the right, William Jenkins, the proprietor of Claypits Pottery, holds a jug ready for his nephew Tom Jenkins (centre) to decorate – Tom was to take over the business in 1939. Such a scene had been commonplace in Ewenny for over 300 years. At one stage there were a dozen small family potteries here, owing to deposits of earthenware clay nearby.
