More about this scene
The completion of Turf Lock in 1830 enabled vessels to enter the canal and proceed up to Exeter regardless of the state of the tide; the maximum dimensions possible were 122ft x 25ft x 10.5ft. Exeter was also the administrative centre for a part of the coast, with Sidmouth and Beer coming under its jurisdiction. The result was that between 1869 and 1880 around 800 fishing boats carried Exeter registrations.
