More about this scene
This is one of a cluster of collieries which opened in east Kent just before the First World War. Villagers also found work at nearby Snowdown and Tilmanstone. By the 1980s the Conservative government had closed Britain's coal mining industry following a series of crippling strikes. At this time, an air of despondency following mass redundancies swept over many village mining communities.
