Born In Fairford 1939 Left 1957 I Still Call It Home Prim Clements
A Memory of Fairford.
My family moved to Fairford with Rev Gibbs? 1937, I always lived at Victory Villas, went to infants school, Farmors School and Cirencester Grammar School, worked at Busbys garage. I love the pictures of Fairford. I remember the walnut trees and wonder how we didn't get really hurt when we would stand under the trees and throw up rocks to knock down the nuts. I remember going to work up the park with my dad and enjoying all the fruit and vegetables they grew. I was always amazed at the size of the old stables and am glad they were renovated into offices and not demolished like the lovely manor house was. I think of all the things in Palmer Hall - movies, Christmas parties (with huge dishes of trifle and we were always given an orange which was special back then), a lady used to teach us kids ballroom dancing if we were interested and then when you got older there were Saturday night dances. Every summer there was a big carnival up the park. We always went carol singing, sometimes just 3 or 4 of us and then the church with adults and lanterns and going to the BIG houses. We used to swim down the Broadboards, collect frogspawn in the spring and put the baby frogs back into the stream after they had legs. Always had to walk through the bluebell woods in the spring, they are so beautiful. Fairford is still HOME and gave me lovely memories. I have lived in Keene, New Hampshire, USA since 1957.
