More about this scene

St Chad's Church in Farndon is one of the few that still carries out a rush-bearing ceremony each year: fresh rushes are brought into the church, and also laid on the paths and graves outside. This recalls a time when churches still had mud floors which would have been covered with rushes to provide a dry footing for the congregation. The famous 16th-century map maker, John Speed, was born in this village.

We actually spent more time cleaning the old graves with an old twig and reading about who was in there. As we got older, about 13-ish, we would go into the graveyard for a sneaky puff of our cigarettes, and hide any spare ...see more
