More about this scene
Farnham had been an ecclesiastical estate since the 7th century, but it was Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester from 1129-1171, who began building a castle when he ordered the raising of a motte and tower in 1138. This structure does not appear to have lasted too long; it is believed that it was demolished on the orders of Henry II in 1155. The ruins date from the late 12th to the late 15th century; two principal builders were William of Wykenham, who was Bishop from 1367-1404, and Bishop Waynflete, who was responsible for the building of the brick tower between 1470 and 1475.
