My name is sammy strachan I lived at 9a Middleton st the miners row's behind the commercial bar from 1952 until 1962.my fondest memories are of the primary school,the high parks,over the bing playing,and the outside toilets.simplicity I know but how I miss them.miss Smith, mrs Harvey and the horrible mr Gibson the head were the teachers at school.how I enjoyed the Christmas parties there and the school dinners.lovely memories,lovely to share them with you...sammy
I’m so glad to find this site I was born at 2 Ross terrace ferniegair in 1950 I have so many great memories playing up the bing going for walks up the high parks the only bad memory I have is of the primary school miss smith was lovely and Mrs Harvey was it was the headmaster he would have been arrested in this day he used to punch you in the back of your head with his signet ring he was a monster 2years I and others ...see more
The posting by Edwin has brought back many memories of the1940's. I know exactly the locations described in his "memory". The hut was owned and operated by Johnny Irvine. Johnny only had the use of one arm, but could wrestle big jars of sweeties with his good arm to sell to the children. I well remember "the huts" and also remember Marion Matheson (who went to school with me) and who was Edwin's neighbour). ...see more
I lived with my grandparents in the late 1940s at 201 Carlisle road Ferniegair, known as the huts which was opposite the gatehouse to the duke of Hamilton estate.My grandma ran a smallholding at the back keeping hens,turkeys,ducks and geese.The land went down nearly to the railway line.I remember the little shop near the railway bridge which was just ...see more
Hi, my mum's family was from Ashgill, although I was born in Motherwell in1965 I like to regard myself from Ashgill. My grandparents were Daniel Gardiner and Isabella Barr. I am responding now because my auntie is now seriously ill and she is the matriarch of the family. We used to get together once a year for a 'get together', but that faded away. Ferniegair is very dear to my heart. Being fortunate to have two sets of relatives who lived there we spent many happy times visiting them. As soon as we arrived at one Aunt's house it was off with the coats and across the road to see the other relatives then of up the high parks to play on the swings and the giant chute, it was ever so high and how we loved it.
