More about this scene

The building was palatial, and would have been comparable to those of Rome itself. The rooms had painted friezes and many mosaics, some of the earliest in Britain. There was a colonnaded courtyard, a reception hall, Roman columns and a scented garden. The mosaic shown is of geometric design; it consists of thousands of tessellated fired pottery, of various colours, which were laid into soft mortar.
