More about this scene
The first 'King Orry' paddle steamer was built in 1842 by shipbuilders Aitken & Napier and sold in 1858. 'King Orry II', built by R Duncan & Company, was launched in 1871. This photograph shows 'King Orry III' leaving Fleetwood during the summer season for Douglas, Isle of Man. For three-quarters of a century the staunch vessel weathered storms in the Irish Sea. It never lost a letter. 'King Orry IV' drifted from her moorings in a fierce north-westerly storm in January 1976. She had been sold for breaking-up to R Taylor of Bury. She was finally stranded on Thurnham Marshes, where she remained high and dry until the next spring tide, but visited by hundreds in the interim and much photographed. Her anchor is preserved at Glasson Dock.
