More about this scene

The original core of the White Lion—to the left of the picture—is thought to date from the 15th century. Fobbing's moment of glory was in the past even then: a local labourer called Jack Straw had been one of the prime movers in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Chaucer mentions him in 'The Canterbury Tales' as a paradigm of noisiness: 'Jakke Straw …ne maden never shoutes half so shrille'. But then, Essex people were not known for going down without a fight.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I lived in Corringham Hill Terrace 1942 -1950. As an 8 year old I remember sliding down the hill in the snow from the White Lion. I think there was a small pond at the bottom, which used to freeze over in winter. I have a photo of 11 of us boys in our cricket team, myself, my cousin Alan and Bernard Slee are the only ones I can remember. I moved to New Zealand in 1950. Are any of those boys still around?
