More about this scene
Visitors to Ripon could hire a carriage to take them on the six-mile round trip to Fountains Abbey, or, if they were feeling fit enough, they could walk it. Fountains was founded in poverty in 1132, and building work continued up until 1524. At the Dissolution it was sold to Sir Richard Gresham and then to Sir Stephen Proctor, who used some of the stone to build Fountains Hall.
