Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal Park, Temple Of Piety c.1885

More about this scene

After the dissolution of Fountains Abbey, the land was eventually purchased by John Aislaby. He landscaped the fields and created the two lakes and the formal water gardens. Next to the round lake he built the Temple of Hercules in 1742, the year of his death. This temple, one of a number of temples and follies around the estate, was then redesigned as the Temple of Piety in 1781. Inside are busts of the Roman emperors Vespasian and Nero.
