Frenze,Nr Diss

A Memory of Frenze.

My grandfather (Frederick William Steward) was a gamekeeper and lived with his wife ( Florence )and there 6 children in a single story cottage,it was deep in the woods, we always went for a weeks holiday there,my father always had a taxi waiting at Diss station on our arrival,we had come from Staines ,Middlesex,it was ever so exciting,as the train had black smoke and made lovely train noises, when we arrived granny always had a wonderful arrangement of Sandwiches and cakes she had made, ( she was a truly lovely granny) I still make her Suffolk rusks, then it was outside to see the Ferrets in their cages, the lovely smell of the wood shed,a quick run to the outside lavatory with the newspaper cut in 8inch squares and hanging up with string, then down to see the stream ,we're grandad had put a bridge over ( plank of wood and a hand rail ) it was quick way for his children to go to school in Diss, two fields they would go over to get to the road and school, but my mother ( Margaret Victoria) was frightened of cows ,so if the fields had cows in they had to up the lane and pass the big farm( they were never allowed to look at the Farm House,) passing the milking sheds and the small Church ( we're my uncle Charles Edward played the organ at the services) it took a lot longer ,so my mother always was in her older sisters ( Rhoda May and Florence Amelia bad books) sometimes grandad would take me to see the horses plowing the fields, and once one of the men put me on the back of one the horses.my granny and grandad lived there from around 1905 until 1951 or thereabouts .then it was pulled down,8years ago I went back to see and it was all overgrown, they went to live at Thelveton in Memorial cottage, and had many happy years of retirement, being daily visited by Edith, their fifth child, who when she married Denny Nunn, they lived at Billingford Common, the last child was Lucy who married and moved to Kent.on doing my family tree, I found someone had called the little cottage in the woods was now listed as The Lodge,Frenze,it was an amazing place.
