A pleasure boat crowded to the gunwales chugs serenely up the river at Fulford, just south of York on the Ouse. A father and his son seem to be skimming stones in the right foreground on the beach, which probably marks the spot where the 'full ford' of the village's name once existed.

My earliest memories were in Fulford, York, at the tail end of the 1960s before my parents moved me to South Yorkshire at the age of six in 1971. My father worked at what was then called the Labour Exchange in York. He was later promoted to a position in ACAS and did very well.
