More about this scene
Furness Abbey was the second richest Cistercian monastery in England. The west tower, built in the 15th century, must have been a magnificent structure; we see it here from the nave. St Mary of Furness was founded in 1127 by Stephen, a future King of England. It is built of red sandstone.
