Post Office

A Memory of Garndiffaith.

Lived on the High Street at the Post Office. Then moved in 1955(?) to new Post Office on Stanley Road, almost opposite the old Garndiffaith Junior School (now Community Centre). Well recall getting a 'basin' haircut at Dai Gurney's. Also the Bar fish shop, my mom liked hake. Came back in 2008 for reunion of Junior School class of '58 - and finally got to have a drink in the Hanbury! Couldn't recognise the modern High Street tho everything gone except the Hanbury! I see a Robert Boucher posting and wonder if Robert is part of the Boucher family who kept the butcher's shop and then emigrated to NZ?

I lived at Lower Ty Gwyn for 13 years where I attended the Garn School and then Abersychan Grammar School. I have fond memories of the Garn. Peggintons, Carters The Temprence Bar were my favourite shops where I would buy sweets especially just after the war when I had a 1/4 of sweets a week on the old ration book. We use to go swimming to the outdoor pool over The British and play for hours down the woods at the back of the park. I remember Mr Skull who was the park keeper, we use to run a mile when he came to lock the park up at night. We use to play whip and top, rounders, skipping, hop scotch in the front street and never seemed to be in the house in those days (not like the kids today) Mr and Mrs Jones were our next door neighbours and I remember Mr Jones was the first in the street to have a car. Nearly the whole street huddled round the Jones's black and white television when the Coronation was broadcasted. Those were the days, I wouldn't have changed them for the world. I can honestly say I am glad I was born when I was born as they were the best days. It was tough but neighbours were neighbours in that era. I eventually left the Garn when I was nearly 18 and joined the W.R.N.S, where I met my husband and moved to Newcastle. I still have family in Cwmbran and Cardiff. We often go up The Garn and reminisce when I visit but it has changed - but there things never stay the same.
