Memories Of Wombwell1950 60

A Memory of Gawber.

At 66 years of age I still keep in touch with most of my friends that belonged to the coal mine community. Living on Wombwell Main Pit Row we were a large family of nine. Our mother did her best to keep us clean and well fed. She was a wonderful mother, friend and neighbour. Mum never turned anybody away.
My twin sister and I attended Hough Lane Methodist (Tin chapel). The Sunday school anniversaries were something special. It was here my sister and I sang our first duet. Miss Florence, Miss Hannagan and Enid we remember to this day. We attended the church up until our teens.
We started Kings Road Junior and Infants at an early age like everybody else. Our first day at school was a nightmare for some. Jane and I decided at play time we did not like school so walked home. Our mothers face went ashen when she saw us. Shortly after that the head teacher picked us up in her car; so much for not liking school.
It was a pleasure leaving Kings Road, the big school called our names. The Secondary Modern for girls had wonderful teachers for the most part. Everybody knew everybody else. You were treated with respect . This is where we formed life long friends.
My twin sister and I were members of the successful school choir, Miss Phillips the choir mistress was probably the finest music teacher in South Yorkshire.
We enjoyed the swimming baths, Wombwell Park and Wombwell Woods. Not forgetting the cricket matches and hanging round the pavillion for the odd sandwich for a couple of pennies. Bonfire night, Easter in school and church and Christmas brought joy to us.
The Whitsuntide walk was a highlight of the year, congregating in the feast field for a sing song.We always wondered how you became the Queen or even an attendant who sat on the dray surrounded by lovely flowers.
Although I left Wombwell in my 20s I still love the place which I call home. Its a pleasure to go back and visit. Its nice to be seen and to see people who you once knew. I have seen very little changes over the years, especially since the mines closed in the 80s.
Best wishes from North Carolina.
Sallie.
