Factory Road, Gidea Park

A Memory of Gidea Park.

My grandparents lived at number 24 Factory Road. They were the last people to leave the street and I remember visiting them for the last time there when the rest of the street was deserted; the postage stamp gardens overgrown and windows broken etc. I was born in 1953 so my memories of the place begin three or four years later of course. I remember that there was an old derilict school a little further down the street from 24. Our granddad worked in the factory at the end of the street, but I'm not sure what he did there exactly. I have a photographic memory of the house, two up and two down, with a scullery and outside loo. The little yard was shared with the house next door and the kitchen doors looked onto each other - the garden was also shared. My grandad loved flowers and although he probably had vegetables as well, it's his roses I remember. There was a gate at the end of the garden leading to a cinder track going along the backs of the houses. There was a large field behind this with a brook running along the edge. I have only happy warm memories of 24 Factory Road.

Hi Pamela, Well, how nice that you remember my grandparents. We only visited two or three times a year, but I used to spend a few weeks during the summer holidays there. Looking at old photos I'm shocked to see how old and poky the houses were...very dark, soot soaked bricks....BUT what lovely memories I have of Factory Road. It felt so safe and friendly. When I went past once after it had been demolished I felt sad.

Hi all, just found this page. I lived in Factory Road late 50's to early 60's when I was about four and a bit. I remember that we lived next door to the Nunn's. Mr Nunn served in the first world war. I remember the field and the huge air raid shelter. There was also a small pond with newts in it. Would love to see a picture of the the old place
Hello Pamela, my Nan was Muriel Murdoch, and she lived with your Mum, Rene at number 26 and your Mum and Dad for a while. (My Mum is Beryl and my Aunty is Chris). Your Aunty Milli and Uncle Ted were my great-grandparents. I would love to have some contact with you as I'd love to know more about Muriel, who worked with your Mum, I believe. Would you be willing to send me an email? Thank you, in anticipation from Kim.
Sorry - I meant your Mum and your grandparents.
