More about this scene

Poltross Burn, which flows through the middle of the village, marks the border between Northumberland and Cumbria. The village enjoyed a brief career as a spa, and it was here that Walter Scott first met his future wife Charlotte Carpenter. Some years later the couple were revisiting the spa when the expected invasion by Napoleon was signalled throughout much of the North by the lighting of beacons. Scott hurried back to Scotland to enlist, covering more than a hundred miles in less than twenty-four hours only to find that it had been a false alarm.
