The Cathedral stands on the site of an earlier building destroyed by fire in 1192. The choir and tower date from the 13th century, and the spire was added about two centuries later. The tower is 220 ft high. Behind the cathedral is the Necropolis, which contains a number of substantial monuments to the great and the good as well as to those who had enough money to make sure that when they were gone, they would not be forgotten.
