A thatcher is at work repairing the thatch around a deep-cut dormer window. The poet Rupert Brooke lived in this picturesque village. Serving at the front in the First World War, Brooke wrote a short poem called 'The Soldier'; surely he had Grantchester in mind when he composed these lines: 'If I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England ...'
