The Smell Of Fish.

A Memory of Gravesend.

I moved to Gravesend in 1967 at the age of 16 , I had a job transfer from Mac fisheries in Yate near Bristol.
When I first saw the Mac fisheries shop in Gravesend High st I was surprised to see how small it was , expecting the High st to be a main road through the town , instead I found this tiny historic rd leading down to the river and the ferry.
Mr Iseman (Fred) , forgive the spelling, was the manager's name , a decent chap, but some of the staff took liberties with him as he was very easy going, I liked him he gave me a lift to the dentist one day in his Austin a35 , he drove fast. I made friends with Dave , a chap about 2 years older than myself , who worked in the shop. I bought my first moped from Halfords whilst working there, Dave had an Ariel pixie mini motorcycle and we used to ride about together on our days off and Sunday's . Loads of happy fun days for about 18 months , then sadly the fruit and veg manager took a disliking to me and being young and not very experienced I sadly left and worked in the co.op for a while before our family moved taking me with them to Ramsgate , another story . I still look back to those short times and smile at the memories, one in particular stands out , there was a cake shop opposite mac fisheries and we could see it clearly from the upstairs restroom window , we used to phone it and ask them what cakes they had and when we pointed out cakes in the window they wondered how we knew as they hadn't a clue where we were ringing from , naughty but at 16 years old , what fun. Loads more to tell .
