The Corner

A Memory of Great Bookham.

It looks to me, that this view is of Hayters shop on the corner of Church road and The Park. We lads would go in to buy sweets and stuff. The Barn Hall is opposite.

I knew it as Walkers newsagents. The building on the right casting the shadow on the road used to be a diary shop, then when that relocated up Church Rd, Mr Walker took it over as a toy shop which he worked whilst his wife did the newsagents. The latter is an art gallery now but in my mind I still see Airfix kits in the window

It's interesting to see that the side windows were blacked out even then, they remain so to this day.
The building is now gone and is now posh flats.
Yes this was my grandmothers shop Hayters. My Dad, Bryan, often helped out behind the counter selling sweets and eating them! My Granny used to go to the station every morning and sell the newspapers.
