Hoy Family

A Memory of Great Dunmow.

My gt,gt grandfather Abijah Hoy was born in Great Dunmow in 1813 and was a farm worker all his working life. He died at an address in the High St in 1881 and on his death certificate his occupation was a "Cow Man".
Most of the Hoy family lived in a row of very early 19thC cottages at Church End, just by the bridge over the River Chelmer. These basic 2up 2down cottages are now Grade 2 listed. Nearly all the family were baptised married and buried at St Mary the Virgin Church opposite the cottages.
I have done extensive research regarding the Hoys, and if anyone is interested, I would be happy to help in anyway.

Doing some family tree stuff my father grandad Albert Bertie hoy came from dunmow do know how he ended up in Hastings ?
Hi, I have two Albert Bertie Hoys on my tree; one born 1877 and died in 1940 Dunmow. His son also Albert Bertie Hoy born 1905 Dunmow and died 1980 Bishop Stortford district. I have no info regarding Hastings. Regards, Christine.
I don't know if this is relevant but even though some with the same sur names say they are not related invariably are. When I was at Berbice House school in the Causeway at some house that were a little like railway cottages or for originally for workers, and there were at least two Hoy girls t opposite the rec, there parents lived in Station Road and I knew Robert, his brother and sister. Another family had a dwelling right next to the Doctor's Pond. In such a small town as it was then they must be related but no one spoke as if they were. We lived in Church end and knew all from next to the black smiths and it has been Florence Cottages and a pub or inn or some sorts, full of rats and a bad reputation! My father took Florence cottges and and did up the rest of the building and there were two older gentlemen, one being called Mr Norberry who had been there for many years. I have a feeling my father had to take it down and he put a garage there or he put a garage there when my grandfather got the whole plot. They were not a monied area, as you say farm workers so some tied cottages but not the gentry until you got to Clock House. I know the houses between there and the Chelmer as there weren't many then there was the community room and The Angel pub and then a mass of tiny dwellings hidden together rather hidden from the world and for very small rents and little convenience and then the bottom end of the rec. I don't know if that fits in to any of what you have researched? I have pictures of that area during early 1950 during some snow drifts.
Thank you for your lovely memories. What was time period that you lived in Dunmow?
It’s quite easy to research people up to 1911, then after that time it gets more difficult! So not sure if the people you named were part of my Hoy family or not. In all likelihood they probably were as such a large family. My mother was one of 11 children and my gt grandmother had 15. Heaven knows how they all lived in such small cottages.
Did you know Violet Edlington, nee Hoy? She was my aunt and lived in Dunmow all her life, dying only last year.
Thank you once again, would always be pleased to hear from you, kind regards, Christine.
Hello. Abijah Hoy is my 4th great-grandfather - my maternal grandmother was a Hoy. I would be interested to know if you have details of Abijah's parents? I have hit a dead end in my family tree. Thanks for this information!
Abijah’s father was Charles Hoy born 1773 married to Sarah Lichfield 1771-1841 in 1792 St Mary the Virgin, Gt Dunmow.
He is on the 1841 living at Ford, which is probably the cottages at Church End as at the time there was no bridge over the River Chelmer. Charles died in 1851. Hope this helps. Christine.
My 7th Great Grandfather was Charles Hoy who married Sarah Litchfield in Great Dunmow. I have done a little research of the Hoy’s in Dunmow, but mainly the Hoy’s of Steeple Bumpstead as that is where my Grandfather was born. I would love to know more about the Hoy’s of Dunmow.
Kind regards
Joanne
Hi Joanne, it seems we are related, Charles Hoy was my 3rd gt grandfather, his son was Abijah 1813-1881, his son was Charles 1846-1918 and his son was Jack Hoy 1892-1976. Regards, Christine.
