More about this scene
This photograph is a peaceful distant view of the remains of the ancient Guisborough Priory, which flourished, but with various setbacks, in the period 1120-1538. It became a very wealthy foundation before the Dissolution of the Monasteries undertaken by Henry VIII in the late 1530s. The east end of the main priory building is shown here, neatly framing the tower of the parish church. Guisborough was regarded for many centuries as the capital of ancient Cleveland.
