More about this scene
The interior of the parish church is very different today. Although the pews of 1876 (which replaced much earlier box pews) still survive, the majority of the interior was remodelled in a major restoration under the hand of the architect Temple Moore between 1903 and 1908. Before this, as we see here, the walls and nave pillars and arches were plastered and whitewashed. The ceiling was under- drawn, and a three-light window served as the east window and was flanked by boards showing the Ten Commandments. Low pews in the chancel served as choir stalls.
