Harlech, Castle From The Marsh 1894

More about this scene
When Harlech was built, the sea lapped around the base of the rocky crag upon which it stands. At sea level there was the water gate, which allowed the fortress to be reinforced or supplied by ship. Any attacker capturing the water gate then faced a climb of 108 steps up the side of the crag to the next objective, an intermediate turret with a drawbridge. Attackers also had to run the gauntlet of artillery fire, possibly from trebuchets, mounted on platforms near to the castle. These weapons, when handled by experienced crews, could be fired accurately.
