Nostalgic memories of Harlow's local history

Share your own memories of Harlow and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I can so clearly recall the school summer holidays back in the early 70's. The paddling pool was full of kids (myself included) having a great time, splashing and playing. And the grassy banks surrounding it were full of mums with picnic blankets, towels, juice and sandwiches. I am sure that the progress (!) that demolished the nearby Swimming pool must have also taken this wonderful place away.
We moved to Harlow from London in 1954 when our house was brand new. We lived in The Arkwrights and when it opened I went to St Albans Primary. Later I went to Netteswell Seondary, which has now been demolished. I have so many happy memories of growing up in Harlow, playing in Stow Woods, cycling along to different places and playing on the play area round Moot House. I also remember buying sweets, 4 for a penny, at ...see more

The second Primary school I attended, just a 100 yds or so along the road was Fawbert and Barnard. (Having moved from E Dulwich during the xmas holiday.) Beside the bus stop was the closest phone box to our house in The Hoo.
In 1965 I was the second baby to be born in the new baby ward at Princess Alexandra Hospital. I wonder who was the first?
Hi, we also lived in Sharpecroft. The Last family moved there in 1956. Also went to Hare Street School. Can't remember our door number. Then we moved to Rivermill. Loads of happy memories, It was a lovely place to grow up in back in the 1950. Barbara Yeowell {Last}
I moved to Churchfield, Harlow, from London in 1955 and I went to the Spinney School and then onto Markhall in 1963. I had fond memories of Churchfield up until 1969 when my brother Kevin Welsh drowned in an accident in the River Stort. We moved to Pottersfield after that and In 1971 I married at St Stephens church, Bush Fair. I lived in various different address from then but the last was Sycamore Field up ...see more
I wonder if anyone can recall Harrison's Newsagents at 92 The Stow? It was opened by my father in December 1953 and sold in November 1980. From 1956 it was run by our manager - Bert Wood (sadly, he had to leave in November 1978 for a variety of reasons). It was then managed by Derek Elmer until we sold the business. I believe it now operates as a Wedding Dress Supplier. Any information / memories would be much appreciated. John Harrison.
I'm almost 18 years old and I would like to get to know some more history about where I have grown up so me and my boyfriend can raise our children. This photo of Broad Walk is where he asked me to marry him last year, if anyone can help me it would be much be appreciated.
I moved to Harlow in the mid 50's from London as a 5 year old child with my mother and father, where I lived on Pittmans field. I went to school at Broadfields Juniors and then moved on to Netteswell. My first job was in the Menswear department at London Coop, in the town centre and then on to Creaseys, in Westgate. My dad was caretaker at the Technical College and my mum was manager of the babywear department ...see more
