Eastern Electricity Board Apprentice Training School
A Memory of Harold Hill.
I attended the 'boards' training school based at Harold Hill, along with 79 other apprentices during 1960/61... I shared lodgings at Collier Row for the first year of the apprentice training course where we made a basic tool kit and tool box all by hand initially, & from raw steel and drawings, along with relevant machine workshop training. After this we were dispatched back to our own area's for the next 5 years apprenticeship! (Bedford in my case), most lads were just 15 or 16 years old! I remember the other 'factory' units in the area as we walked to our bus stop. There was a chewing gum factory and a ladies underwear manufacturers based nearby, opposite the boards 'playing fields'. I also recall the walk back to Harold Wood railway station to catch the train back to Liverpool Street & St Pancras to get back home once a week for day release at college.
