Happy Days At Queens Road

A Memory of Harpurhey.

I was born at my grandmothers house no 30 Queens Road in August 1945. Mum, dad and me later moved to no 18. I went to Collyhurst Infants School in 1950 to 1956. My best friend was Cynthia Wilson, she lived in Smedley Road and we remained friends through the years - unfortunatley she died 4 years ago. I then went on to Smedley Secondary School and left at the age of 15. My friends there were Beryl Roberts, Susan Balantyne, Brenda Birchall and Linda Paul whose parents had the chip shop on Rochdale Road. We used to play tennis in Queens Park and spent many happy times in the park whilst dad was playing bowls with his friends. I remember Wetherbys bread shop on Rochdale Road owned by Miss Wetherby. Also the tripe shop, just further down the road, where mum used to go for tripe for her lunch on Fridays. Grandma and grandad used to take me to the Hippadrome regularly. They were good old days when everyone seemed to look out for each other and their doors were always open to all. AHHHH HAPPY DAYS
