More about this scene

This £40,000 concert and dancing hall opened in 1903; the plans were by R J Beale and the noted theatre designer Frank Matcham. The old box office is still here, and displays the original ticket prices. The hall now seats 1,000, and is undergoing much-needed remedial work on the corroded concrete. The tree on the right was the second oldest in the town - it was removed after recent gale damage. The oldest tree survives at the Queen Parade end of Victoria Avenue.

Market Place Shops In The 1960’s
What was the name of the Grocers shop next to Blamey’s the Florist in the Market Place? I think it was something like Bentley’s, and was run by a lady called Doreen.

The Alex
My father (Snowy) was manager at the Alex from the early 50's until 1962. I remember how huge the bars seemed to me as a small child and how small they seemed compared to what I remembered when I returned for a brief visit in the early 80's. 1970 1980s Harrogate

I spent some of the happiest years of my life in Harrogate, working in "The Grange" hotel (an old peoples home basically, along West Stray), I also worked in "Blind Jacks" behind the Prospect Hotel (we sold Old Peculiar ale and wow it was potent stuff - I was warned not to sell too much to people and keep an eye on them as it was so strong and tended to take people by surprise lol), and in both the Stalls and ...see more

West End School
I was there 1957 to 1961 Mrs Gray and daughter Mrs Wayman ran it,wonderful teachers,Mrs.Brittain/English /Miss Leathead/maths.played sports in the Oval.pupils Chris Smith,brother Colin,William Watson,John and Maggie Thompson still see William occasionally,tipped our caps to pupils parents outside the school gates. Harold Styan taught us PE.and juggled his clubs on school sports day.lt was a great school got me through my 11plus and taught us manners,great memories. Gordon Lund

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
